Questions

FAQ

Got questions? We might have guessed some of them.

The festival

Where is the festival?

Around The Free Association’s theatre in Southwark and the Union Theatre right next door. They’re so close you won’t even have to leave Old Union Yard to move between them. Venues and getting here.

What does the festival look like?

Five days, Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 May 2027. Workshops during the day, shows and socials in the evening, and some great late-night antics.

Will there be jams?

Yes! Late-night jams where you turn up, put your name in a hat and play. It’s a lot of fun.

If I’m not performing, can I still do workshops, come to the socials and jam?

Absolutely. The festival welcomes all improv lovers to get as involved as they like.

Applications

For performers and teachers.

When do applications open and close?

Applications open on 23 November 2026. The closing date will be announced when they open.

When will we hear if we’re in?

We read every application and reply to everyone. Dates for decisions are announced with the closing date.

Can I apply if I’m not in a team?

Yes. This year we’re taking teams, duos, solo shows, musical improv and workshops. It’s one form for both stages.

We don’t have a video of our show. Does that matter?

Unfortunately yes. We need a video of a show to fairly judge whether it’s a fit. Anything filmed on a phone is fine.

We don’t have artwork. Does that matter?

Another unfortunately yes. We need artwork with your application so we can market your show if you get in.

I can only come for part of the festival. Can I still apply?

Yes! We’d love you there for all of it, but we know that isn’t always possible, especially for a team.

Will you consider short-form improv?

Big Scene has a strong focus on long-form, because that’s what we do, but there’s no harm applying if you think your show is a good fit.

Tickets & access

When do tickets go on sale?

March 2027. FA members get first dibs. Sign up for festival news to hear first.

Is it accessible?

Both stages have step-free access to the theatre and bar, with wheelchair spaces. There’s no step-free access to the FA’s upstairs.
